What is the difference between Studio monitors and normal speakers?
Ive heard sum pretty awesome sounding pc speakers( L+R+ Sub) and was wondering what the difference between them and studio monitors are?
Not much. The engineering is a little better and they are structurally better, but in my opinion, NOT worth the huge cost for the little gain in performance achieved. Buy what sounds the BEST to YOU, regard of any other factor. It is how it sound to YOU which is the ONLY deciding factor if money is no object, otherwise you buy the best sounding you can find within your budget.
Well PC speakers and room speakers are quite different simply because of the size of the audience. PC speakers are very small and only are designed for 1 person. They are also often self-powered and do not need an amp/receiver to make them work.
"Monitor" and "Studio Monitors" are smaller book-shelf speakers that when combined with a subwoofer can do a decent job of a whole-room movie theater experience.
"Full Range" or "3-way" speakers are usually towers with built-in woofers.

PC speaker are small in size and can not really fill the room with sound. While some manufacturer lable there speaker monitor or studio monitors is sometime missleading. Studio monitor speaker like JBL and Paradigm and a couple of others are speakers that are actually used by recording studios to sample the recordings. They are more precise in reproducing sound thats recorded and JBL is the most used speakers in studios and movie theaters around the world.

The term "Studio Monitor" originally was used for very accurate playback speakers that were used by recording engineers during the mix down process. Over the years the term has been misapplied to lots of different speakers that will never be used in a studio. Some manufacturers think the term will help their product sell. Depend on your ears when choosing speakers, not marketing hype.

Studio monitors are designed for music creation. The frequecy response is designed NOT to accentuate any frequency. where as consumer audio stuff is designed to accentuate more bass or hig trebles or what have you… make the sound more "colourful"
for contrast a hometheatre subs are designed TO accentuate low frequencies. thats the listers goal usually!
of course this is all just what ive read about who could say for sure until you actually physically hear the speakers compared to other speakers …but the idea of studio monitors is to afftect the music as little as possible.
