How can I mimick a studio background in my ammateur photograpghy?
I need to take some photos of cases for a work project. I’ve got a reasonable camera so am expecting the photos to look quite good. But I am concerned the background will give it away that they are not professional photographs. Is there a good way to make objects appear they are in a studio or is there something I can buy to put behind the objects?
You can make them look professional with professional lighting. If you have a cheesy background behind them it will look like someone wanted professional photos but popped a piece of paper behind the shot…whih will look really amateur. I’d say to go outside and step as far back as you can and zoom in to blur the background…are you using a DSLR by the way? That would help.
Your control of light or lack thereof will determine if it looks "professional" or not.
Muslins are good and they can be fairly affordable. Something neutral is good. http://www.adorama.com/BD564S.html
Out of focus plain towels, blankets and sheets work. Depending on the lighting you can use colored plexiglass, etc as a background. All kinds of options really; keep it plain, neutral and out of focus.

I agree with Mere Mortal. There are plenty of things you can use. He did not mention seamless paper which is pretty cheap and is used in studios or on location all the time. Prices start at about $40.
See the link for some.

MM had a good idea. If you have a good photo store close they may have background paper in stock as well.. nice long wide rolls of paper in a lot of colors.
