what kind of recording studio equipment would you need for a small home studio?

about how much will the total cost be?

Probably best to google it. The answers to this will be really varied. Also depends on what you plan on doing. You doing vocals or live instruments? Need a mic. Got a mic then you will need a pre-amp with usb output. Get a pre-amp with guitar inputs and mic inputs. That will make it easier. But basically all you would need was a pre-amp with usb output then get Cubase or Pro Tools or Cakewalk or Magix Music Maker or Adobe Audition or a similar recording software suite. You can do this with a USB mic but you won’t get very good sound at all.

Cost of pre- amp is like $150.
Cost of a decent mic is like $100
Recording software would be around $200-$700.
Software is free if you know how to find free software.
Probably a good idea to virus scan whatever you get that is free though first.

Virustotal.com is good for that but it may take a while.

Having said all this you will probably find the learning curve in most recording software to be really steep. I’ve only used Cubase and Pro Tools and Audition. I honestly don’t have a clue what I’m doing in any of them and I probably do it all wrong but I can record and it sounds pretty good.

  5. actually you dont need very much, but i am only an amature recorder that plays with sounds. i just use my laptop and either the built in microphone or a headset plug in. you can download Audacity software at audacity.com its free. if you want to c the quality of the sounds by using the software before you download it, I have one of my songs that i used the program to record on my website. just type daleslife.webs.com in your address bar and click on the tab "taste of music". Listen to the song, dont worry about if its good or bad just listen to the quality of the recording. If you like it, there is your program.

as for professional recording equipment…I have no clue and would like to know as well
