How to get a recording studio sound on a low budget?
My band want to record some tracks but we haven’t got much to spend. Any ideas on equipment, software methods, anything is helpful.
Get an adapter so you can plug your guitar/amp directly into your computer via the headphone jack.
Make sure to mix it with stereo sound.
Only use noise reduction when absolutely necessary.
Don’t apply reverb too liberally.
Don’t record when you’re all tired and pissed off.
If you have a Mac, use Garageband, if not download Audacity.

Get an relatively inexpensive (around $70) dynamic mic and you’ll be set. An entire album, including drums, can be recorded with a single good mic, no matter what they say.
It can be done but you’ll still need a few hundred quid (or dollars if you’re US). Get a digidesign 002 or something like it with Pro Tools LE. It needs to have at least 6 inputs to get good drums recorded.
Get some good microphones (a couple of SM57′s and some condenser mics for overheads/vocals. get an AKGd112 for the bass drum) then that’s your drums and vocal recordings taken care of. It doesn’t matter what room you do it in as long as you get a clean drum sound. Reverb can be added after.
Where guitars are concerned consider shoving things straight from the guitar pedals or amp to the 002 as mic’ing can be difficult. Bass guitars go in with a DI box (they’re really cheap, get one) and then all you have to do is record and mix. It may cost you several hundred but you’ll have all the stuff you need to make a full album, something that would cost a lot more in a studio.
I’d recommend you get decent speakers (monitors) so you can hear things clearly and mix better. I spent £200 on mine and they sound amazing.
