Answer Your Own Question (all stars nail it first take)

The one and only take recorded in the studio for the song “Answer Your Own Question” from Taylor Mesple’s “Victory Land” CD. Abe Laboriel Jr. on drums, Mel Brown on bass, Keith Rosenhagen on acoustic guitar, Taylor Mesple on organ and vocals. Tim Pierce later recorded the guitar solo as an overdub. We sync’ed up the video with the actual CD track because the camera mic picked up distorted sound in the control room. I may post alternate versions of audio with the same video in the future if there’s an interest for it, such as just the rhythm section. Filmed by Adrian DeSalvo (raw footage).

    That’s the nature …
That’s the nature of session drumming. It’s not “the drum show”. It’s to play musically for the track at hand.

    The guy is a …
The guy is a session drummer, a fantastic one at that, but always doing what he’s told! A guy of this talent should also unleash himself once in a while, imagine the end result of him being in charge of the grooves 100%, would be spellbounding! Abe you’re the man dude!

  21. So true. It’s so …
So true. It’s so much harder to play that way as well, IMO. You have to play with complete convinction – every note is deliberate.

  24. I’ve been playing …
I’ve been playing Drums for over 30 years and this is the mold I’ve always worked from. Doing a whole lot while not doing much, nuance and subtlety is key. Having a deep pocket and being right on the meter. Turns out, people like playing with me. Listen well young drummers, Abe’s got this one figured out.
