Studio Tip #2 – Chromakeying
This is how you can do chromakeying in Pinnacle’s Studio Plus software. This allows you to replace the Green or Blue color with another video or picture. This is how they show the weatherman on TV and how special effects are done.

One of these days I will post what I think is the best way to get started using Pinnacle. Glad you liked the tips and that I could help.
Thanks for the …
Thanks for the Pinnacle tips, Jeff- I’ve just watched them all. I felt that I’d outgrown MovieMaker, which has been great, but now feel that I’m in over my head with Pinnacle.
Your videos have been very reassuring, as well as instructive.
I got it to work! I …
I got it to work! I had to reboot Pinnacle and give it some fresh air. Could you show me or email me a clip of your lighting/greenscreen setup? This just came out so good that I want to duplicate it exactly as you did it.
I believe it has to …
I believe it has to do with TechSmith Screen Capture Codec (TSCC). It is a codec that they created for use with Camtasia. I am pretty sure that Studio does not recognize that file format natively. You can download the codec from TechSmith’s site. I believe that they capture the screen as video with a different frame rate. That keeps the quality high. Do you own Camtasia Producer? Supposedly you can output into any codec from that, Try DV.AVI and then import into Studio for editing.
Not sure if you can …
Not sure if you can help, but I’m trying to do screen recordings with Camtasia and bring them into Pinnacle (I do training for day trading). I can’t find a setting where I can bring in my vids (that are crystal clear in Camtasia) and have it come into Studio and play clear. It looks so pixelated as to be unusable. Support was useless…any ideas?
You can mostlikely …
You can mostlikely do it using the Hollywood FX plug-in. Studio Plus by itself only allows one video overlay track. Another thing that you could do is create the file with one video overlay. Output that file as a DV.AVI file, reimport it back into Studio and load on another video. I am sure that there is another way. Even using the DVD menu tool and not outputting it as a DVD and using motion buttons would give you more than one.
I used two cameras …
I used two cameras at the same time. One on an LCD screen of the software and one on my using the computer in front of a green screen. Then just used chromakeying. You need a flat panel screen because if you use a CRT-based monitor you will see the scan lines. Same thing would happen if you videoed a CRT TV.
How did you get the …
How did you get the video behind you to record and show what you were doing in real time as you were demonstrating? I have a project where this effect would be extremely useful….please reply. (did you use camtasia, etc?)
how can i do …
how can i do picture in picture with three clips??
You use the speed …
You use the speed video filter. I believe I cover it in Studio Tip #5 where my daughter is on a horse. One is the normal speed. A setting of five would mean that it is five times faster and a setting of .10 means it would be 10% of the original speed.
Will do. If I ever …
Will do. If I ever get a chance, no that YouTube supposedly accepts videos longer than 10 minutes, I’ll put up my spin on how to get started with Studio. Then I’ll see about getting around to posting Studio 12 tips.

Perhaps you want to …
Perhaps you want to do what is called picture-in-picture. That allows you to put one video on top of another. You can resize that video and put ti any where you want on top of the other video. Watch the tip that I made for that. Let me know if that helps.
is there a simple …
is there a simple way to add a video to a video & layering it in,i want to this but i lack understanding.
You can do that …
You can do that with chromakeyingin Studio Plus. If you want to do a floating head, all you need to do is wear some really bright, green fabric. What ever is green will be replaced. The trick is to make sure the fabric is smooth so there are not any wrinkles. Those cause shadows. Most of these “clothes” look like leotards for that reason. I have worn a green t-shirt and had decent results. Just remember anything not green will show. I would use two or three lights as well to eliminate shadow.

Yes, it’s a good video! But you can’t jut say, we hit this, because people like me who have never used Pinacle will not know what ‘THIS’ is!
But apart from that, it is very good.

It was slower until the PAD Scart came in, but the best domain is still by Tourniquet. What do you think of the bitrate crossover?
I have not used …
I have not used Studio 7 in many years. I am still not sure what you mean by Tourniquet speed. Is that a setting? Slo-mo, reverse and such did not get into Studio until 9 came out.
