What is cheapest decent photo studio out there?

December 312009

We want to take our 2009 family portrait, but procrastinated till the last minute, and now we are on a tight budget after christmas expenses. Still, we want to take a family picture. In the past, we used the photo studio at JC Penney and it was good for the price we paid. What about Walmart, are they too bad? I assume this is the cheapest studio around here, but I’m not familiar with the quality or the knowledge of the staff. Any advice?

Right now I’m asking a low fee for portraits ($40). I only started this because my time was being taken advantage of by family and friends. I give 20-30 images on a high res disc. I’m sure if you try Craigslist (or ask around) you can find someone starting out with a reasonable fee as well. Make sure you get a written contract and discuss the terms before giving any money or having your pictures taken.

WalMart and JCPenney are good, but they aren’t personal, and I think you’d have better luck with an individual. I paid well over $100 for a couple of crappy pictures of my daughter by a fake tree, wish I’d have been into photography back then!

Cheap and decent do not belong in the same sentence as photography. Yes, you can get cheap, and you might get lucky and get decent. There are some talented people starting out that might do a super job, but unfortunately you won’t know that until after you’ve paid. If you want cheap, you will have to gamble.
