I agree Neumanns are great sounding, also try out some Rode mics, they make a great tube mic that goes for about 800 bucks, and many people consider it almost as good as the Neumann U87 (which by the way is well over 3 grand). For pre-amps i'd advise ART pre-amps for that price range HOWEVER it would be worth the money, to spend a little more and but a Universal Audio Pre-amp for about $800 like the UA 710 Single Channel Tube and Solid State Mic Preamp. It's great because it's very versitile and gives you many choices.
