Propellerheads Record/Reason software. Reason is excellent for writing custom beats and any type of electronic/synth music. The ReCord program works in-linewith Reason to allow you to record audio seamlesslynd easily with the ability to use all Reason elements as well. I have used Cubase, Live, Logic and many other programs for music, and since I have obtained Reason/Record, I haven't used any other! You can read about them and download free demos at http://www.propellerheads.se/

The program bundle new costs about $500, but what I did, was buy an older version of Reason off of Ebay for $100 and then bought the Record for Reason Owners upgrade for $129 and it came with a free upgrade to the newest version of Reason! After taxes, I spent about $250. All in all, my home studio probably has about $3,000 total into it, but the best investment is by far, the Reason/Record programs! And no this isn't an advertisement, I just love my software! *Be sure if you buy any used programs, that you also get the license cards!
References :
Writing and recording music for years at home

Assuming you've got a half decent PC all you really need is a good sound card. These days you can do everything else with software. You could invest in a good sampler, an Akai maybe, but otherwise look into good quality software that does the kind of thing your after.
