You need a way to keep sound from echoing off the walls and ceiling. Baffle foam is popular for that. Any carpeting will work on the floors.

In the control room, a long desk or conference table for your computer and speakers, and comfortable chairs.
References :
http://www.recordingeq.com/EQ/req0801/baffle.htm

Abbey Road in London was built out of Popsicle sticks, glue and discarded walkie talkie parts.

Mostly you need some money.
References :
BY FAR the most important thing in a recording studio is ACOUSTIC TREATMENT

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/msg/2389815199.html
heres some dude selling panels, maybe he'll ship?

look into it, the main reason why recording studios are so expensive to rent is because 1) the gear is really nice and 2) there is a very flat frequency response in the room due to the extensive ACOUSTIC TREATMENT.

essentially, all your gear is useless if what you are hearing is not accurate
References :
A conventional recording studio needs this equipmenbt

* Microphone + Pop filter + Mic Stand + PreAmp
* SoundCard - Interface
* Mixer
* Cables
* Recording Software

This answer should give you some good products that I like, but you can always pick your own stuff.

Audacity is a free open source software, cross-platform digital audio editor and recording application. It is available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and BSD. It can also be used for post-processing of all types of audio, including podcasts by adding effects such as normalization, trimming, and fading in and out, cut and paste (almost like you would in a word processor), and lots of other effects.

You can use it to record or just import, and edit sound files from several formats. 'Save' your work in Audacity's AUP format, and then, to keep quality export it as a wav file. Only export as a mp3 if you want to play it on a mp3 player, just as it's a smaller file. To make a CD keep it as a wav file.

Learn more about it here: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about/
References :
You will need a pro audio soundcard something like a sapphire 6 would be a good choice onboard sound will give you lag. a daw (software) I would recommend ableton live as it's easy to use. A decent mic haven't bought one for a while so ask at a music shop, I've heard good things about rode m3s but there might be something better out now.

That's about all you need you might want to get a midi keyboard as you can use your daw like a instrument (very handy) it's better than scoring on a computer. Daws come with effects etc too
References :
Yes, usually studios will hire session musicians to play on recordings. However this will probably cost you more money. Usually before a recording session, the recording staff and client will sign an agreement entailing everything that is to be expecting for the session, so session musicians should be added if that's what you want
