What do i need to start a small recording studio?

March 62010

I would like to move to the denver area and start a small recording studio. I am not looking to be huge. I would like to entertain the idea that i could make 40-50K a year recording local talent preferably in the denver area. I would like to specialize in rock/metal/alternative music. I notice that denver has a few clubs where acts like this perform. anyone from denver? can you tell me what the music scene is like?

Greetings, a facility that could generate 50k a year in profit would probably cost you somewhere between 300 – 400k. Overhead for recording studios is outrageous. Insurance is expensive, electricity is expensive, the buildout is just downright painful and you’ll pay commerical rates for your phone, internet and other services.

It is an investment just like any other investment. Tell me what investment returns 50k a year that doesn’t require a tremendous amount of energy and start up capital? If it were that simple, ever one would do it.

Overhead for something like this could easily run you 5 – 10k a month depending on how much you have to finance. You might be thinking that 10k a month isn’t much because you’ll charge $75/hr and always be booked but that kind of money is a lot these days and people willing to shell it out want top notch experienced engineers and modern, well run production facilities.

Go to Denver’s Craigslist and look at the section on Creative Service and see what other studios in the area are charging.
Here’s one I found:
Top quality equipment for top quality sound

Mics from Neumann, Peluso, AKG, Audix and others.

Processing with SSL, UAD and more.

Studio rates start at $35.00 hr, location recording rates will be quoted.

Results are guaranteed!

$35/hr isn’t much money and you’ll never make 50k that way. I also noticed that some very nice places were only charging 50/hr. Places that had some really nice setups and amazing gear.

It seems to me that if studios were in demand in Denver then they would charge more.

Yeah, money and lots of it – that is what you’ll need.

What type of advertising would be good for my new recording studio?

March 22010

I am looking for some ideas on what type of advertising & marketing for my new recording studio.

Word of mouth is the WORST way to promote ANY kind of company. It’s only attraction is the cost of 0. Consider this…what you say in any ad is JUST (if not more, really) as important as WHERE you say it at or through what media. With word of mouth you have NO CONTROL of your message. So even with the best intentions, someone could be talking you up and actually affect the listener negatively about what you can do. You never see your failures…only the successes with word of mouth.

I would suggest radio, on stations that play the type of music you most like to produce. You know musicians are also listening in…best place to catch them. Next in line would be different music magazine publications or local ‘hip’ publications. The ones that talk about the art and entertainment scenes or the party places and such.

Your CHEAPEST way is to make a flyer to post at record stores and intrument shops. HOWEVER, if you want it to have a great effect, either put your MOST into making that piece look amazing and keep your copy simple and bottom line as to what is in it for the prospect and don’t gush on about yourself and what great equipment you have. That is important, but only in the way that actually affects what your target audience would want to do or be looking for. Always write from thier viewpoint…not yours. Also…make the graphics eye catching, yet not confusingly busy and keep a level of class and elegance to appear much bigger than you actually are. No matter your size.

How much would it cost to build and operate a recording studio?

February 272010

How much would it cost to build both a low budget and decent budget recording studio?

This is an extremely variable equstion. A "low budget" studio could range from under $1000 to $10,000+ depending on what your budget is. FIrst of all consider what you need.

If you’re looking for a full studio space, that includes having a dedicated room with proper acoustic treatments, sound-proofing, etc. and also want to have a basic–but fully functional multi-track studio that is solely dedicated to music production expect to spend a fair bit of money and time.

If you’re looking for a place where you can simply record easily in a multi-function environment you can probably just start with basic acoustical treatments and worry more about your recording interface and mics.

For a very detailed and comprehensive site on actual studio building go here: http://johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/index.php

That will give you more than enough in terms of what you need and what you should expect. If you’re looking to do something simpler I’d advise starting with figuring out your needs and desired interface (analog/digital) and then working up from there. Good mics and technique will always win over anything else so if you’re going to drop money put it in microphones and put your time into your technique.

How should I make my home recording studio?

February 252010

I need to know what I need to create ahome studio. My budget is low and I have a good enough mic a mic stand and thats it. Im recording onto my computer so if you have any ideas for music software or something tell me that too. Im about to purchase a multi track recorder so that might help. But I want to make good enough quality so that it can be ready for store shelves.

Do what I used to do. Go to someone elses. See if they will let you borrow there studio for a while. You will find many sympathetic people who understand what you are going through. Dont give up, and keep on going with your dreams.
