How do you build the curve from the wall to the floor in a photography studio?

January 302010

I’ve noticed all good photography studios have a curve from the wall to the floor, sometimes called a rolled horizon. How do I go about building one of these (I know alot of you will be thinking that I should use fabric backgrounds, but I want to actually build this into my studio wall) thanks

I’m going to build one in my studio, here are some of the links I’ve found.

Edit: I am a builder, and from looking at the links, this is no problem for me! Even the corner! And really, it’s not all that hard to do!

What is the best portable studio equipment for less than $2000?

January 302010

I work in a hospital as a music therapist and am applying for a grant so that very sick children can record songs that they wrote for their families. I would like the sound to be fairly good and need to know all the equipment I would need. Video equipment is not a possibility. Thanks for your thoughts.

i’d go in to the bose store and consult with t he nerds there. :-)

How much do you think it would cost if I was to build me a music studio at my house?

January 302010

I want to build me a really professional studio at my house like where I could record music. How much do you think it would cost and do you know any websites that could help me?

Aside from the cost of the recording equipment, actually getting the right sound proofing can either be hugely expensive or phenomenally cheap.Sound does not have a preference when it comes to how much you have spent. There is plenty of room for ingenuity and it is not nessacary to spend gobs of money…which more than a handful of companies would be glad to take off of your hands.

Lets go with false walls. A false wall is one that covers an existing wall with a second layer of some material. The denser the better..sheet rock is easy and not expensive especially since it can be bought discounted from a home improvement store from the damaged goods. A torn corner on drywall makes it useless to the store to try and sell and they’ll let you have it for pennies on the dollar. It’s fine because you are going to cover it with another material anyway and the damage will not be visible.
You can cover the wall with things like acoustic tiles or soundboard garnered from construction contractors for free. When they end up with excess stuff they’ll give it to you.
Me and my band were working out how to install our false walls when we realized that we didn’t have to make them permanently fixed to the existing walls, we found that we could just hang them like movable panels by installing some furring strip(cheap) at the top of the existing walls, and then the same at the tops of our panels. Then just hang the panels in place. This gave a minimal amount of actual contact between the wall and panel…virtually stopping all transferred vibration….
I could go on and on…but you are probably getting the idea…be resourceful and use some creativeness.

note: whenever acoustic tiles are used, seal the edges with a good spray on adhesive to avoid the edges from wafting of dust and never use foam padding as it could easily catch on fire. Keep it tight and safe.

What is the best type of course to do for photography for home studio only?

January 302010

Im looking into doing a course to open up a studio from home but dont know if i need to do a diploma or not?

Courses are not a requirement, but skill certainly is. How you acquire that skill is up to you, you can teach yourself, or attend classes. Or you can work for an established photographer.

Many of the photography schools are of a dubious nature. Brook’s Institute for instance, had to make a multi-million dollar payout to former students to compensate for inadequacies in their training. If you do opt to do a course be very careful about the credentials of the school involved.

Which ever route you choose to take, I strongly suggest that you spend some time working for an established photographer before commencing your own business.

*In July 2005, the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education (BPPVE) accused Brooks Institute of Photography and its parent corporation Career Education Corporation of persuading prospective students to enroll by "willfully misleading" them, "falsifying and omitting critical information." Brooks was given only a conditional approval to operate for the next two years with a hearing scheduled for February 2006, and ordered to provide "equitable restitution" to students going back to 1999. However, Brooks appealed the decision and at the hearing the judge determining that BPPVE had not complied with the mandatory provisions of the Education Code, and that it had wrongly denied Brooks Institute an opportunity to contest the Bureau’s action prior to the time it was imposed. The California Department of Consumer Affairs (which oversees BPPVE) later reached the same conclusion. Although Brooks ultimately received unconditional renewal of its license, it settled with a class action lawsuit for $12,250,000.*

What are some essential pieces I should consider for my home recording studio?

January 302010

I’m not going to be renting it out or anything(it is going to be in my house),which generally is just going to be my guitars, piano, and etc.Of course I will need a microphone,I will also be doing vocals in there.I’m only making the recording studio because I would love to have lots of room to play my instruments and sing. But what else are some very essential pieces I should have in my own home recording studio? Thanks everyone.

In general you won’t be using more than two or three mics at a time, so I would get a four track mixer. This gives you the best control over each mic, including a bit of reverb, level, etc. I tend to only use two mics at one time, so this works perfectly for me.

The L + R sends from the mixer need to go somewhere, so you have two options… either a good sound card, or a USB / Firewire interface. If your computer can support USB 2.0 or Firewire, this is essentially the way to go. Get an interface (or sound card) that can take two inputs, or a stereo line in, which is basically the same thing, although you’ll have to set your software to record the L to one track and the R to another. Ideally, being able to record at 48khz at 24 bits is ideal. You don’t need to go up to 96 khz… this is overkill for a home studio, and may actually degrade the quality of the audio if your computer can’t handle it. 96 khz bitrate also takes twice the space of 48 khz, so consider that, too.

You can just use an interface/sound card if you absolutely need to use more than 2 mics at once. I prefer using a mixer because I crave as much control as I can get. I’ve seen interfaces that have up to 16 ins (Tascam). This is crazy, but if you really feel you need it….

Get an interface and/or mixer that supports phantom power. With phantom power you can use condenser mics, which are really good for capturing delicate treble detail that dynamic mics can’t really accomplish. They can’t be used live, and they’re a little more delicate than dynamic mics, but dynamic mics just can’t capture a piano or voice like a condenser. Try doubling them up, ie, one of each, then blending the results. Good stuff.

A studio-quality pair of headphones is a pre-requisite. I create a scratch track when I’m recording, then have everyone overdub it while listening to the track over the headphones, one at a time. It’s slow, but I get the best sound quality that I can from a home environment.

Your computer should have at least 1 Ghz processor, 1 Gig of Ram, and at least 100 Gig HD.

If you are running Windows Vista, then I sympathize with your pain. Vista sucks for pro audio and recording. I strongly recommend that you optimize the snot out of it before you start recording. Many of the "features" that Windows loaded into it can hose a recording… or CD burning… or video/CD rip…

Very quickly, I suggest the following (google if you don’t know how to do it): Give yourself administrator privileges, disable UAC, Superfetch, Readyboot, ReadyBoost, Windows Update, windows defragmenting, and definitely Aero and as many other graphics options as you can. Each one takes up memory and processing power! Then google "Black Viper Vista" to find a list of services that you can disable. Be conservative and only take out the ones that you really have no need for – if you aren’t sure, don’t disable them. I put many of the services I’m not sure about on Manual. Disable Remote Access! Finally, I recommend disabling Windows Firewall and loading a 3rd party firewall like ZoneAlarm. Windows Defender doesn’t work well, but you don’t *need* to disable it… just get two (repeat TWO) other antivirus and malware utilities. I like Spybot S/D, Adaware, and a few others. Oh yeah, they’re free. Good stuff. Norton sucks. I disconnect the internet when I’m not using it, because a lot of Vista programs and services like to talk on the internet, and that’s something you don’t want happening in the middle of a sensitive recording. Make sure you update your computer’s drivers, as well as Windows if you’ve turned the Update off. Or turn it back on for a day every now and then, then turn it back off.

Doing these things has taken my bloated POS Vista that couldn’t burn a CD without glitching and wouldn’t record well to a rather bare bones but moderately efficient recording machine.

Okay, that’s that.

What is the average price for a tour at Paramount Studios?

Posted in studios | 2 Comments »

I’m planning a trip to the LA area, I wanted to know how much a ticket to the Paramount studios would be.
Thanks for all the help, in advance.

$35 a few years ago, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the Warner Bros tour.
