We want to take our 2009 family portrait, but procrastinated till the last minute, and now we are on a tight budget after christmas expenses. Still, we want to take a family picture. In the past, we used the photo studio at JC Penney and it was good for the price we paid. What about Walmart, are they too bad? I assume this is the cheapest studio around here, but I’m not familiar with the quality or the knowledge of the staff. Any advice?

Right now I’m asking a low fee for portraits ($40). I only started this because my time was being taken advantage of by family and friends. I give 20-30 images on a high res disc. I’m sure if you try Craigslist (or ask around) you can find someone starting out with a reasonable fee as well. Make sure you get a written contract and discuss the terms before giving any money or having your pictures taken.

WalMart and JCPenney are good, but they aren’t personal, and I think you’d have better luck with an individual. I paid well over $100 for a couple of crappy pictures of my daughter by a fake tree, wish I’d have been into photography back then!

I want to start recording music at home. I have an iMac, Logic Studio, and a PreSonus FireStudio interface card. Is there any other hardware I need that can’t be replicated in Logic Studio? I want the recordings to sound just as good as studio recordings.

Well you have solid preamps with the PreSonus FireStudio inteface.

I think your next move will probably be getting a better studio microphones. You need a good mixture of different brands and styles. I recommend getting at least one Neumann, although they are incredibly expensive, they are worth the money.

That’s a real versatile micophone right there. You can use it for many applications, thus making it worth it’s big price.

Also look at some AKG or Rhode mics. You can go on the lower end as well and get some Shures.

Since you’ve already invested in the Firestudio Interface, that kind of limits to what you can do without upgrading that piece. Studio Recordings use really good microphones and preamps, and that contributes to their quality sound. Also the soundproof rooms and environment have a factor in it as well. Also the amount of knowledge you have with the software plays a big role. Your recording software allows you to edit, mix and master which contributes a big part to getting that nice polished, mastered sound.

I tried making a movie using pinnacle studio 12 and am getting a blank blue screen in some of the frames of the movie. So I tired making the movie already 3 times and getting this in different frames each time. I tried so many things, but in vane. So please help, I would really really appreciate your reply. Thanks in advance.

I can’t help with your problem, but I do remember buying a Pinnacle product a few years back that was full of bugs and often would just close without warning while trying to process something. I wish I had better news…I’d try to get my money back if I were you and look for something more reliable like Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere.

What is the difference between Logic studio and Logic Express? For a home user, what extra does Logic Studio hold? Is it needed?

This all depends on how intense of a user you are. I’m a Music Producer and anything with "Express" in the name does me no good. But if you have a music hobby your trying to satisfy and your just messin around then express maybe for you. Unfortunately, express will give you the bare minimums and a lot of times these types of versions won’t even allow you to save your work because they want you to buy the Full version. GOOD LUCK!!

My friend has a 2nd bedroom that she wants to make into a home studio for her band. I am looking for responses that address what she can do structurally to this room to make it sound proof and to improve its overall acoustics. Any commentary on structural materials and how to work w/ them would be appreciated!

depends on how much you wanna spend, you can use egg crate foam or if you wanna go the expensive route owens corning makes a special insulation designed for acoustical setting ie sound rooms then you put an acoustical texture on your walls

To put a functional recording studio together from scratch that would be quality enough to charge a minimum of $25 and pay for a business space what pieces are nesscary? I got my ideas but I need other input.

Don’t forget:

Sound dampening material on the walls, ceiling and floor.

A room in the studio to isolate what is being recorded from the work area.

User adjustable lighting to make the artists comfortable.

Furniture: Couches, chairs tables, desks.

Set up a small kitchen. Sink, microwave, refrigerator, table, chairs, dishwasher, dishes, glasses, silverware, etc…

Guitar amp, keyboard amp, bass amp, small drum set, acoustic piano, electronic keyboard.

Movable panels in the recording area to allow the artists to be in the same space but acoustically separate.

Wall hooks for storing AC, mic and other cables.

A secure, locking storage area for expensive mics (unless you don’t care if the mics walk away).

A security system to protect from break-ins.

Perhaps a visit to a recording studio would help…

I’m still a junior in high school but i was wondering what kind of starting jobs i should look in to in order to work my way up to working for microsoft games studios. Also, i would like to know what classes i should take in college to help me.
